PIP tribunal success rates — what the numbers actually say

PIP tribunal success rates: what the official numbers actually say

This is the most-asked question in the PIP process, and most forum answers mangle it. Here are the

real figures, with their exact definitions — because three different "success rates" get confused.

1. The tribunal overturn rate: 67%

Of PIP appeals that reached a hearing in April–June 2026, 67% were decided in the claimant's

favour (HMCTS Tribunal statistics quarterly). This is the number people usually mean by "PIP

tribunal success rate". It is high because the cases that reach a hearing have already survived

two DWP decisions — it is not a promise, and outcomes still depend on your evidence.

2. The DWP climbdown rate: 17%

Of appeals lodged against initial decisions (April 2021–March 2026), 17% were changed by the

DWP itself before any hearing — known as "lapsed" appeals. Some claimants win without ever

entering a courtroom.

3. The MR change rate: 27%

Of mandatory reconsiderations cleared (excluding withdrawals), 27% led to a changed award.

The MR is free and is the required first step — you cannot appeal without one.

The base rates behind the funnel

most decisions are never appealed at all.

The practical read: if your MR fails and your evidence is solid, the tribunal stage is where

claimants most often win — but only if you actually lodge the appeal. Most people who "lose" their

PIP case at tribunal never appealed; they stopped at the MR.
