PIP points calculator — every descriptor, straight from the Regulations

Pick the descriptor that best matches you for each activity. The calculator adds your daily living and mobility scores and compares them with the legal thresholds: 8 points = standard rate, 12 points = enhanced rate, for each component separately. All 55 scored descriptors are quoted from Schedule 1 of the Social Security (Personal Independence Payment) Regulations 2013 (as amended) — checked at legislation.gov.uk on 2026-10-09.

What this tool does not do: it does not predict your outcome, does not decide eligibility, and does not assess you. The DWP health professional decides which descriptor applies — considering whether you can do each activity safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly, and in a reasonable time (regulation 4(2A)). Only one descriptor scores per activity (regulation 7). Nothing you pick here is stored or sent anywhere — the page runs entirely in your browser.

How the points system works

Each activity scores exactly one descriptor (regulation 7): the one satisfied on over 50% of days — or, where more than one reaches 50%, the highest-scoring. Daily living and mobility are added separately. At least 8 points in a component means the standard rate of that component; at least 12 means the enhanced rate (regulations 5 and 6). Points are never added across components.

If your score came back lower than expected

A 0-points or low-points decision is not the end: around a quarter of mandatory reconsiderations lead to a changed award, and the majority of PIP appeals that reach hearing succeed. Start with the 0-points guide, check how descriptors map to evidence, then build your MR letter.
